1. You feel a draft with the window closed
Air moving past a closed, locked sash usually means the seal or the frame has given up. Caulk and weatherstripping buy time, but on older single-pane units the leak is the window itself.
2. Condensation between the panes
Fog trapped inside insulated glass means the seal failed and the insulating gas is gone. The glass unit can't be dried out — that window is done insulating.
3. Your power bill keeps climbing
Upstate summers are hard on cooling costs. If your HVAC runs constantly and your attic and ducts check out, old windows are a common culprit.
4. Sashes stick, drop, or won't lock
Balances wear out and wood frames swell. Beyond the annoyance, a window that won't lock is a security and egress problem.
5. Rot, soft spots, or peeling paint
Press the sill and jamb. Anything spongy means water has been getting in for a while, and the framing behind it deserves a look too.
6. Outside noise comes right through
Modern insulated glass cuts road and neighborhood noise noticeably. If you hear everything, you're likely on original single-pane glass.
7. You're planning to sell
New windows are one of the few upgrades buyers notice immediately from the curb and on the inspection report.
